Episode R6 – The Heroic Age

“I should weary the reader, were I to describe, step by step, the progress of the work, and the discoveries gradually made in various part of the great mound.  The labours of one day resembled those of the preceding; but it would be difficult to convey to others an idea of the excitement which was produced by the constant discovery of objects of the highest interest.”  – Austen Henry Layard, Nineveh and Its Remains

While Layard resumed his Assyrian excavations, and Rawlinson continued to decipher Akkadian, both efforts began to shed light on the even older civilization of ancient Sumer.

  1. Very interesting podcast, I read "Voices in Stone" many years ago, Nobel Prizes should be awarded in archaeology and philology.
Even today only a handful of scholars can read cuneiform, the intellects of those pioneers were remarkable.

Thank you for this and your earlier podcast.

  2. Hi Russell, glad you're enjoying the series. I agree – they really were giants of the field. Hope you enjoy the upcoming Troy episodes. Take care, Scott C.

I have read “Götter, Gräber und Gelehrte” by C. W. Ceram and your serious is not a bit less capturing.

I just can’t wait to listen to the next episodes and to some I listen more than once,
