Episode 27 – Count No Man Happy

“But in every matter it behooves us to mark well the end: for oftentimes God gives men a gleam of happiness, and then plunges them into ruin.” – Solon of Athens

Peisistratos’ first two attempts at tyranny were thwarted by the Athenian eupatridae.  The Spartans cultivated a reputation as the most fearsome warriors in Greece.  Prophesied to destroy a mighty empire, King Croesus of Lydia led Anatolian forces against the Persians and Medes, but the unconventional strategies of Cyrus brought him to a bitter end.

  1. Hi, there! Just stumbled across your podcast. Haven't even listened to Episode 1 yet. Looks like I'm a latecomer. Found you through a recommendation/review on David Crowther's History of England podcast site. I am, of course, a THoR veteran and regular listener of Dan Carlin as well, and a big fan of all things ancient (I'm a collector and occasional dealer of ancient coins). I'm looking forward to getting you in my head for a while! Thanks in advance- I'll comment again once I've started listening and get caught up. (I also work graveyard shifts as a night auditor in a resort hotel, so history podcasts get me through the night).

  2. I love your podcast! It's like listening to someone read the Bible, but not the crappy bits about Jesus, but the part in Genesis where it gives a list of king after king after king and all these races that you've never heard of. Like this:

The descendants of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
[10:3] The descendants of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
[10:4] The descendants of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim.
[10:5] From these the coastland peoples spread. These are the descendants of Japheth in their lands, with their own language, by their families, in their nations.
[10:6] The descendants of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan.
[10:7] The descendants of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

Anyway, great work, keep it up! I'm sorry it has to end soon.

  3. Thanks! And I don't know about ending "soon" – I've probably got 5 – 6 eps left, and with them coming out every 2 weeks, that should take us through the Summer at least. But I appreciate the sentiment anyway! Yes, TAW has great ancient names. Not sure if you were around for my "Baddest Assyrian Ruler Name of All Time" poll – Ashurbanipal won! Thanks for listening.
