Episode 15 – Holding Action

During the first half of the eighth century BC, Egypt, Babylonia and Assyria all struggled against the forces of entropy and decline.  In the absence of the Aramean threat, Israel and Judah resumed their perpetual struggle.  Urartu expanded its regional influence at the expense of a weakened Assyria.

  1. Excellent podcast! I'm now at episode 13 and HOPE(!!!)to see the next episode appear sometime soon, so that I don't suffer from unpronouncable-assyrian-king-names withdrawal too much.

Seriously, very good stuff. I just finished the History of Rome podcast and this is just as good (and the subject matter makes for very interesting episodes).

  2. Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! Yes, the names they can be tricky – but on the bright side there aren't a lot of Assyrians around nowadays to complain about my pronunciation. On the new episode front, I hate to admit it, but I'm being compelled to take another semi-extended break due to work and personal travel. I'll be posting the details on the blog shortly. But I plan to have (at least) a few more episodes out this year, and probably wrap the series in early 2013. Thanks for listening!

  3. Ah well, c'est la vie! Life has a habit of getting in the way of things. Anyways, do what you have to and I'll be looking forward to continuing your podcast with the next episode, whenever that is!

    Thanks for all of this.

  4. Thank you so much for these podcasts! You do an excellent job, and I'm looking forward to more, if you get around to it. Where's the donation button?

  5. Thank you very much! And don't worry, I'll definitely get around to it. I'm currently putting together the next Episode, on Tiglath-Pileser III and Sargon II, and I may have it ready as early as next week (keep your fingers crossed!) I've gone back and forth on the donation concept. I certainly appreciate the interest and generosity, but it's such a labor of love that I'm still happy to do it for free. Thanks again for the feedback.

  6. I just re-listened this morning. "Buzzkill prophets" is an awesome turn of phrase (or band name?).
Somehow following this up with the In Our Time episode "Prophecy"
